For hotels in the Bahamas, coastal Florida, and other salt-air markets, the buying decision gets even more specific. Corrosion, freight, fuel storage, noise limits, and delivery logistics matter almost as much as the alternator and engine. A hotel that expects dependable standby power during outages needs a complete package that is specified for the property, not a standard open-set unit sold as a bargain.

What makes the best generators for hotels

Hotels are not simple loads. A small boutique property may only need to cover guest rooms, front desk, refrigeration, pumps, internet, and emergency lighting. A large resort may need to support chilled water systems, laundry, restaurants, staff housing, elevators, watermakers, and back-of-house operations. Some owners only want life-safety and limited comfort loads. Others want near-full operation during an outage.

That difference changes everything. The best generator for one hotel can be the wrong generator for another hotel with the same room count. You need to know whether the unit is covering emergency circuits only, a priority load bank, or the full property. Gas units can work well in some mainland applications, especially where natural gas service is stable and emissions requirements are a major factor. But for island and remote properties, diesel usually wins on fuel logistics and operating practicality. If the local grid is unreliable and fuel delivery planning is part of routine operations, a diesel package with an integrated or external tank is often the cleaner procurement decision.

The trade-off is maintenance discipline and fuel quality management. Diesel systems need proper fuel storage design, fuel polishing plans in some cases, and regular test schedules. That is normal commercial power practice, but it should be planned upfront rather than treated as an afterthought.

There is no honest way to name a single best size for a hotel. Still, there are common ranges that help frame a project.

A small inn, lodge, or limited-service hotel may fall into the 60kW to 200kW range if the owner is only backing up core operations and selected guest loads. A mid-size flagged property often lands between 200kW and 600kW depending on HVAC strategy, kitchen loads, and whether elevators are included. A hotel package should be evaluated for sound attenuation, placement, airflow, and exhaust routing.
